J. Arvid Ågren is Assistant Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University and Research Associate in Genomic Sciences and Systems Biology at Cleveland Clinic Research. His research focuses on the evolution of within-organism conflicts, including selfish genetic elements and cancers. He is the author of The Gene’s-Eye View of Evolution (Oxford University Press 2021) and, with Manus M. Patten, the editor of The Paradox of the Organism: Adaptation and Internal Conflict (Harvard University Press, 2025). He is Associated Editor of Proceedings of the Royal Society B and BioScience. He studied evolutionary biology at the universities of Edinburgh and Toronto and was a postdoc at Cornell and Harvard.
